Hugely anticipated Danny Boyle sequel 28 Years Later wrapped production in the summer, but now it’s come to light that this $75 million movie was shot using adapted iPhone 15 Pro Maxes as the principle filming method, according to Wired.
This makes it the biggest movie filmed using smartphones to date.
The upcoming horror thriller is set to launch an entirely new trilogy of films, penned by Alex Garland, and starring Jodie Comer, Cillian Murphy, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O’Connell, and Ralph Fiennes.
According to the article:
Principal filming for 28 Years Later wrapped at the end of August, and until now the production has kept under wraps the fact that the movie was shot with smartphones, with the staff being asked to signed NDAs preventing the disclosure of this detail.
Wired also shed a light on another filming method: “In addition to using the iPhone 15 Pro Max as the principal camera, some scenes in 28 Years Later were shot with action cams strapped to farm animals.”
I don’t know about anybody else, but this title is something I’ve been checking up on via IMDb for quite a long time now. I’m super hyped it’s finally happening, and that it includes Cillian Murphy. I’m also happy about Comer joining the fray.
Do I care as much about the smartphone angle? Not really, but it is noteworthy if you’re a filmmaker looking to justify making something on your iPhone. Now you can say: “Look at this! They did it, why can’t I?”
And there’s absolutely no reason why you can’t.
Garland has already teased he has a “big” idea for the third movie: “I have got a really cool idea for it, but it’s a much bigger movie, and one of the things about 28 Days Later is that it was small and punk and this idea is less small and punk.”
Hmmm, okay then. Bring on 30th June 2025, when 28 Years Later is released in cinemas!
