The Oxford Dictionary definition of cyberpunk is a science fiction genre featuring a lawless subculture of an oppressive society dominated by technology.
Do you think that’s our future?
In June, Geek Native had some Loke cyberpunk battle mats to giveaway and so asked that question.
Very often competitions attract attention from people who like to find and take part in giveaways online. There’s no problem with that, but since it’s not clear what a non-gamer could do with a book of cyberpunk battle mats, Geek Native tried to keep this particular competition on the radar of gamers only.
It didn’t work. Hats off to the competition bounty hunters. As you can see in the stats, 11.5% of people entering the competition didn’t know what cyberpunk was.
Do you think we are heading to a cyberpunk future?
Gamers, though, or people who know what cyberpunk is are mainly expecting us to embrace a cyberpunk future and about a third of respondents thought it would come within the next 50 years.
Do you think we are heading to a cyberpunk future? | Responses |
---|---|
I don’t know what cyberpunk is. | 11.54% |
I don’t think our society will end up like a cyberpunk dystopia. | 15.38% |
I think we’ll end up with a cyberpunk-like world in 20 years. | 19.23% |
I think we’ll end up with a cyberpunk-like world in 50 years. | 30.77% |
I think we’ll end up with a cyberpunk-like world in 100 years. | 23.08% |
The usual disclaimers apply to Geek Native’s approach here. The cyberpunk future isn’t a prediction from experts, it’s the results from a relatively small competition.

What do you think? Are we heading to a cyberpunk future and, if so, when do you think we’ll see it?
