In September, Geek Native gave away a copy of Gears of War: Bloodlines, the official tie-in novel to Gears 5 and Gears Tactics.
To enter the giveaway readers had to complete a poll, say whether they identified as a geek or not and whether they thought there would be a World War in their lifetime. “World War” was not defined.
Here are the results;
Do you believe there will be a World War in your lifetime? | Tally |
---|---|
I’m a geek, and I think there will be a World War in my lifetime | 23.26% |
I’m a not geek, and I don’t think there will be a World War in my lifetime | 23.26% |
I’m a not geek, and I think there will be a World War in my lifetime | 19.77% |
I’m a geek, and I don’t think there will be a World War in my lifetime | 33.72% |
Combining the “War” and “No War” tallies we see that, phew, most people (57%) don’t think there will be a World War in their lifetime.
Do you believe there will be a World War in your lifetime? | Tally |

I think there will be a World War in my lifetime | 43.02% |
I don’t think there will be a World War in my lifetime | 56.98% |
Geeks v Non Geeks
If we compare, in percentage terms, whether people think there will be another World War or not by geek and non-geek, we discover that geeks are more optimistic than non-geeks. In other words, geeks are less likely to think we’ll take the world to war again in their lifetime.
[Geek] Do you believe there will be a World War in your lifetime? | Tally |

Do you believe there will be a World War in your lifetime? | 40.82% |
I don’t think there will be a World War in my lifetime | 59.18% |
[Non geek] Do you believe there will be a World War in your lifetime? | Tally |
---|---|
I think there will be a World War in my lifetime | 45.95% |
I don’t think there will be a World War in my lifetime | 54.05% |
This is not the first time geeks have had a more optimistic outlook on life. In August, Geek Native revealed that geeks were less likely than non-geeks to predict a cyberpunk future in the next 20 years. However, geeks are more likely to worry that something dangerous might be exposed by melting arctic ice.
