The work in progress cover art for Chaosium’s Lords of the Middle Sea has been revealed.
The artist is Ossi Hiekkala known for outstanding work on Flamme Rogue, Castell, Honshu, Eclipse and others. Chaosium says that the people featured on the cover are the games’ pre-gens and their in-house playtest characters.
The original Lords of the Middle Sea is a board game from 1978. Created by Lynn Willis the war game is set in 2401 and in the flooded ruins of post-apocalyptic North America.
According to creative director, Jason Durall, Lords of the Middle Sea will use Basic Roleplaying as a system.
Characters are known as voyagers, and they belong to one of the six nation-states surrounding the Middle Sea. Voyagers are the crew of an airship, which needs fuel, helium and other maintenance while also a target for bandits.
The skill list is lighter than RuneQuest and characters have paired personality traits (like Generous vs Selfish) as found in Pendragon.
Chaosium is typically hedgy on dates when their RPGs are due, but The Lords of the Middle Sea might well be a 2021 release.
