“Generic Locations” sounds as if it’s going to be a quick, cheap and simple product. It is. Generic Locations is the name of the series. This particular Generic Location is Devil’s Mouth so that’s certainly not a generic name. I’ve got to say, “Let’s go to Devil’s Mouth” sounds about as tempting as “Let’s go to Innsmouth”. The sly GM might change the name of the town.
There’s only four pages in Generic Locations – Devil’s Mouth. This isn’t a d20 product so we don’t loose a full page to legal text. We loose a full page to “Contact Eilfin” details instead (which don’t even take a full page). There’s a whole page for the front cover too. That’s two pages.
Devil’s Mouth only costs US$1 though. This really is a cheap but simple product. Why would you buy it? Um. In theory you’d be looking for a generic location and I suppose you do get it.
There’s a bit of a plot to the place. Devil’s Mouth isn’t just a town. It’s a volcano. It’s stupid to build a town on the edge of an active volcano… this we know and this the PDF admit… but when an avid follower of a/the Fire God decided it was a good idea the town did well enough to continue.
Now Devil’s Mouth is ruled by a corrupt and bullying fire wizard and influenced by a fire priest.
I think you get best value for money from Devil’s Mouth in the artwork. For a $1 you get a decent sketch of a small town on the side of a smoking volcano. I’ve got to admit; that’s a pretty tempting fantasy setting for a brief stop over (hardly generic at all!).
Although a US$1 barely registers on the cash till there’s not really enough in the supplement to make it worth while. On the plus side the supplement is fantasy generic and can be used in many settings – but on the down side this means no pre-genned stats. There’s just no real reason to click the extra links and there are more effective products to use to bring your ecart up below minimum checkout values.
