There’s a D&D movie on the way with talent like Chris Pine attached. There’s also a Magic: The Gathering movie and Netflix series.
In yesterday’s invenstors call, Hasbro talked about a restructure that made Wizards of the Coast in charge of digital licenses and EOne in charge of entertainment. The latter includes the D&D movie.
They also confirmed several writers had been hired to develop premium TV series designed to become the foundation for a “new robust brand universe”.
Hasbro has talked about the D&D TV series before and John Wick scribe and mastermind Derek Kolstad had been attached.
This is the first time the preparation for TV has been presented as a universe.
Typically, universes mean that TV shows are related. Movies might tie in, too, as they do with Marvel, but not with DC. Netflix’s Defenders series with Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist shows is a concrete example.
The D&D and Magic worlds overlap through Theros and Ravnica. Given that the investors call also confirmed a Magic: The Gathering crossover with both Warhammer 40K and Lord of the Rings, we can now hope that crossover is ring-fenced from the continuity so that Warhammer 40K and D&D don’t end up being related by universe.
