Companions’ Tale is a map-making storytelling game created by Laura Simpson in which one player tells the tale of an epic hero. The other players tell the companions’ tales, build the world, and try their best to make sure they don’t become some footnote in history.
In 2020 the Indie Groundbreakers awarded Companions’ Tale Game of the Year and now the RPG is available as a module on Roll20.
The Mentor will tell you that the Hero learned sorcery when they visited the High Hills together, in lands where maps are scarcely drawn.
The Lover will tell you that the Hero actually grew up in the High Hills, and knew by heart the solemn and slow songs of its people.
But listen to me: I was the Hero’s Rival, and I knew them best. We stood together in the Southern Shores, blades in hand, as we encountered something truly unexpected…
The Roll20 adaptation of the game takes about 2.5 hours to play and is suitable for three or four players. The module comes with a deck of themes and art, including 20 illustrated face cards, reference cards and rules handouts. The module also includes variant rules such as the Lovers’ Tale, First Contact, and the Guardians of the Arcane City.
Roll20 Director of Licensing, Emily Floyd, told press;
We are thrilled to have worked with Laura and Sweet Potato Press to bring the gorgeous art and innovative narrative gameplay of Companions’ Tale to our virtual tabletop. This was an incredible opportunity to explore new styles of integration to the VTT while supporting independent creators and small press publishers whose contributions to tabletop gaming are vital to our community and our industry, and we are excited to continue supporting more projects like this in 2021.”
