It’s been 25 years since Pokemon Red and Blue for the Game Boy came out. Generation I introduced 151 Pokemon, and we’ve had a further 700 since then.
Which Pokemon are the most popular?
The Toy Zone researched this, using Google Trends. It shows that while Pikachu often appears, the cute yellow monster isn’t the most popular Pokemon everywhere.
In Europe, Charizard is the most popular Pokemon in nine different counties; Andorra, Czech Republic, Estonia, Ireland, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Sweden and the UK.
In North America, the Ghost-type Gengar is most popular but not unnaturally so. Worldwide, 2.2% of searches are for Gengar, and in the United States, 2.6% are. However, the USA is responsible for a huge number of searches.
In South America, Charmander is the most popular Pokemon in Brazil, Chile and Peru. That puts the Fire-type at odds with Pikachu, most popular in Bolivia, Ecuador and Suriname.
In the Middle East and Centra Asia, Pikachu is the most popular Pokemon in six countries. A challenger is Mew, who is most popular in Afghanistan, Bahrain and Kuwait.
In the Rest of Asia and Oceania, Pikachu dominates with some 21.7% of all searches.
In Africa, it’s Pikachu again as the Electric-type comes top in 14 different countries.
