The Queer Games Bundle for 2021 holds no punches with its introduction. It matters.
If we had 1/3rd of the budget of an AAA game, we could give every solo developer a livable wage for a year and every single team a massive funding boost. Imagine what the developers and artists in this bundle could create a year from now if they weren’t worried about starving or how to pay their rent this month.
As it happens, the 195 queer artists from Itch.io have put together a bundle deal that might address that challenge. If it’s successful, the bundle may be their only source of income for months for some of them.
There’s an impressive 235 games in the bundle. The bundle costs $60. I did the maths; that’s $0.26 a game. Frankly, 235 would do me for years. One game a week would take four years to get through.
Games include nilson’s GraveCamp, alienmelon’s GIRB, Abyssal Uncreation’s _transfer and DarkChibiShadow’s Tomai. The list goes on and on.
The Queer Games Bundle’s goal isn’t just to make sure there’s no more starving indie developers but also a vibrant games community that isn’t ruled by a few megacorps.
The Queer Games Bundles (with an S – more on that later) go live at 5AM tomorrow. If that’s 5AM BST, with Itch.io doing a helpful conversion on the timezone, then that’s in just 8 hours.
We’ll get access to the games then and see how much progress we make into the bundles’ $5 million goal. That’s right; $5,000,000. After all, nearly 200 people contributed.
There are two bundles; both the same. The first costs $60. The second is the Pay What You Can Edition, which is currently set at $10, but I presume you could also pay $100.
