The original manuscript for AD&D’s Deities & Demigods is live on eBay and bids have taken the price beyond $10,000.
Printed in 1980, the unbound and hand-typed document was written by James M. Ward, a designer for TSR. As it happens, Wizards of the Coast recently released one of Ward’s original D&D titles Gamma World 1e as a digital bundle on DriveThruRPG.
The eBay user clay.74, notes that the bundle of aged pages is being sold, as found, in the original cardboard box they were stored in.
Photographs from clay show stat blocks and lore, revealing snippets about the pantheons the hardback introduced to the game.
Another photograph shows a document apparently signed by Ward and dated 2021, which says;
What you hold here is a unique and amazing piece of TSR history. This is the typed manuscript for the DEITIES & DEMIGODS hardbound book.
Ward continues, adding;
The editors at TSR gave me 750 copies sheets of paper with the form they wanted me to start with for each of the listings at TSR. I would then take a single sheet, put it into my typewriter and type up a deity or magic item, hero, or monster.
