D&D fans have long wanted the old TSR (1) space fantasy setting of Spelljammer to come to 5e. Wildjammer is one such attempt, and it’s a good one.
You can download Wildjammer: More Adventures in Space! from this Dropbox link.
Now, you can also grab a free FoundryVTT module from GitHub as it’s been made available by SurrealSage.
As Sage points out, we see a glimpse of what Spelljammer might be like in the trailer for Baldur’s Gate 3.
The Illithid pilots the Nautiloid ship through the clouds in the trailer, but in Spelljammer these magical ships fly through space.
Wildjammer uses third-party 5e content, tapping into Mage Hand Press’ respected Dark Matter full science fiction conversion for 5e.
Why not just use 5e’s sailing ships mechanic? SurrealSage explains;
This system uses a different scale of combat for ship fights and has means through which player characters can use their own attack bonus, class features, etc. to influence the way a fight goes. It is designed to feel fairly close to normal D&D 5e combat that we’re familiar with so it is easy and intuitive to use. Although I have made significant changes and merged in ideas from other system, they deserve the credit for many of the core ideas. If you want a setting that’s a bit more science-fantasy, go get Dark Matter!
In addition to tokens and screens, the FoundryVTT support for Wildjammer now includes;
- Custom Wildjammer vehicle sheet
- A set of compendium packs (with items, class features, bridge crew actions, spells, ships, weapons, etc)
- A quick reference guide
There’s a Spelljammer Discord server where Wildjammer’s creator and other fans hang out. It’s a good place to show support, thanks, or ask questions.
