Spellarena has two knock-out ideas that make their Never Ending Dungeon Kickstarter stand out from the plethora of dungeon and battle maps being offered.
Their system procedurally generates entire dungeons and other fantasy landscapes suitable for flatscreen TVs or VTTS. They don’t get into the details, but it is also possible to have physical tiles created and sent to you.
These procedurally generated dungeons can be run as solo games with monsters and encounters created on the fly. Over 500 people have joined the campaign, getting lifetime membership and you can do the same at Kickstarter.
Included themes in the project go beyond dungeons. There are winter tiles, ocean, city, hell, forest, village, mountain, maze, park and glade.
The software is coming to Steam. While the Kickstarter doesn’t go into the details, I imagine you pay a one-off activation fee (which may be the same as lifetime membership) and may have to pay for digital add-ons and likely will for the third-party marketplace.
The unknown is just whether that bespoke physical printing will exist or whether it’s just for the Kickstarter. It’s looking like a one-off for the Kickstarter, although you can always print maps on your own paper with the software at home.
Never Ending Dungeon builds you a labyrinth, a path through a forest, a cave, or a tower from ready-made tiles. It will fill it with monsters, NPCs, loot, and traps. It creates a base for your adventure – automatically and procedurally. It is a solution for shorten your session preparation time and make it simpler to run your adventure.
There are already several freebies available;
- Free FoundryVTT maps.
- Free adventure.
- Free sample map.
A pledge of €30 (about £26) gets a lifetime license, 5 digital map tilesets, a Kickstarter object set, stretch goals and pledge manager access.
At €45, you also get early access to the beta program.
A pledge of €80 adds 5 printed sets of map tiles and 100 terrain pieces in vinyl stickers.
Higher tiers exist. In fact, you can spend a thousand Euros with Spellarena to add-in modules, a DM screen, a custom portrait, adventures, encounters and other exclusives.
The fulfilment of the project is expected in September 2022, as there is still development to do.
