Dead Box Games, that’s Frank Tedeschi and Derrick Nau, have taken the whimsy of unexpected shrinking and blended in elements of cosmic horror and D&D.
A Kickstarter campaign to fund a softcover, complete with a risograph book, for a 5e adventure suitable for characters at level 3 to 5, funded on day one. You can take a look at progress or join in from the pitch page.
In the adventure, a mini-module of about four sessions, characters become infected by a fungal blight – the Bleaksprout. Infection brings shrinkage, and our heroes become small enough to encounter the Sporlings and become involved with the Court of The Sporling King.
Does the Tarantula Witch have a cure? Will a trip to the dangers of The Underlog help?
Included in the campaign is risograph art, sometimes as player handouts, sometimes just to look cool.
A risograph is a digital duplication technology similar to screen printing (ink is applied one color at a time) but done using a machine similar to a photocopier. Risograph machines use special semi transparent inks which when layered create organic, handmade effects. Risographs are popular among zines and indie creators because the print’s quality and price. Risograph printing produces a beautiful product that feels great in your hand.
If you’re backing the campaign to run the adventure for people, then, thank you, you’re a DM who spends money and time for other people. The risograph approach seems like a nice touch, turning the book into a gift for you to keep, and I like campaigns that include this sort of thing.
A pledge of $5 is all that it takes to get the PDF copy of Bleaksprout. Whereas at $9 plus shipping, you get that PDF and a two-colour risograph print of adventure.
The $14 tier is far more popular, adding the risograph player handout and unlocked stretch goals.
There’s only one limited tier left, from the very top, a Live on Roll20 game with Frank, plus 5 copies of the book and other perks. That’s $350.
Delivery on the project is slated for March next year.
