My Tyrano is the closest I’ve seen of a Disney-anime mashup that’s come from Japan, rather than Disney pushing into the anime style.
And it’s all dinosaurs.
Based on the picture book series “Tyrannosaurus” from Tatsuya Miyanishi, specifically book 11, Zutto Zutto Isshodayo (We will be together forever and always), My Tyrano is hella cute.
Looks cute? Worth keeping in mind that the director is Koubun Shizuno, who helms Knights of Sidonia, a Netflix CGI-anime series in which humanity is on the wrong from a dominant alien species and all but destroyed.
The soundtrack to My Tyrano is significant, too, with Oscar-winning composer Ryuichi Sakamoto providing the score.
Plotwise, we have Tyrano, who is a Tyrannosaurus afraid of the dark. Tyrano meets Punon, a Pteranodon girl who cannot fly but still has hope. Together they adventure to find heaven, er, or Eden or some such fabled better place.
Delayed by lockdowns, the feature-length is due out in Japan on December 10th.
