Jayson Elliot, who set up one of the later TSR’s and The Gygax Magazine, has a Premier Issue of The Dragon. That’s the magazine that became known as The Dragon Magazine.
We’re talking number one, volume one, from June 1976. It’s on auction and bidding has surged past $1,000. Gamers want this slice of history.
The Dragon Magazine became the most important periodical for TSR and D&D for many gamers.
Jayson says the magazine is somewhere between Fine and Very Good quality, based on the grading conventions of The Acaeum.
There’s no staple rust, the page corners are crisp, and everything is intact.
The flaws are an embossed “From the Library of” in the bottom right corner and the original owner’s name written in light water-based ink on the top of the cover. There’s some very light foxing near the spine on the front (you can see in the closeup), shelf wear on the back cover, and page 30 has a wrinkle in the bottom left corner.
This is not a mint copy, but it’s one of the finer examples I’ve seen.
The auction winner will get the magazine shipped to them in a rigid Flat Rate Priority Mail Box, with careful padding to ensure it survives the trip.
