I’ve been enjoying the slow reveal of the anime based on Sachiko Kashiwaba’s The Abandoned House by the Cape novel. Slice of life has become fantastic folklore and fantasy.
Even the title has changed, as sometimes happen before (whether) anime get an English release. The film I’ve been calling The Abandoned House by the Cape also seems to be The Lost House by the Cape. Or sometimes, The House of the Lost Cape. Whatever the title, it looks great!
The show is about a young woman who joins a girl and an elderly woman in a picturesque house to discover themselves.
It’s a traditional Japanese house, a Mayoiga, which means abandoned but well maintained.
As revealed by the trailer, and not a surprise to anyone who’s read the novel, there’s a lot more than soul searching, and friendship forming that happens in the Mayoiga.
The latest trailer reveals the kappa, some of the spirits and entities that appear in the story.
The Abandoned House by the Cape is part of a remembrance of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami 10 years ago. I think it’s fitting and appropriate that it looks to tap into a remarkable story.
