We might be getting a sneak peek at 2021’s most popular Halloween costumes as pop-culture retailer Zavvi have written up some Google search trends on cosplay. The company confirms that DC’s growing popularity, with searches up 48% from 2019, is reflected in retail trends.
Zavvi Marketing Manager Declan Murphy said;
Our customers have consistently shown a love and passion for DC Comics characters. We’ve seen a substantial demand for our DC-based products, and we expect the brand will remain a pillar of the pop-culture community for the foreseeable future. These recent findings are clear evidence of that.”
So, what did the company find? Harley Quinn is the most searched for cosplay option, followed then by Superman, Joker, Batman and then Deku from My Hero Academia in fifth.
That’s not the only ranking for My Hero Academia as Todroki comes in in seventh and Bakugou makes ninth.
Cosplay itself has become increasingly commonplace, although cosplayers will have found the lockdown especially challenging. Matt Wacker, a cosplayer who sometimes dons his Batman cape, added;
It’s the ability to be someone you’re not, or maybe someone you’ve always wanted to be. It’s about respecting something you adored as a child, and now choosing to express that to the world in a very creative way.’
You can see the full research over at the Zavvi blog. That popular DC merch Zavvi mentioned includes Harley Quinn goodies and a little cosplay.
