There is an official D&D calendar. It’s made and sold by Danilo, and you can pre-order it there, or apparently get it already from Amazon or the Calendar Club.
Wizards of the Coast have tried bold new angles with their D&D gifts and merchandise this year. Perhaps the most striking example of this is the augmented reality enhanced class pin badges, limited in number and exclusive to Entertainment Earth in the US and Zavvi in the UK.
But, I do not think we’ll see a D&D advent calendar from them. Not this year; it’s almost too late (they sell out), and perhaps never.
I’m a great fan of advent calendars, happily carrying news of Funko’s calendars (note: also selling/sold out) but concede they’re bulky, awkward and religious items. What’s worse. Any D&D advent calendars for 2021 have a few months to sell out or are unlikely to sell at all; they’ll literarily be past their date.
Dice calendars alternatives
What would a D&D advent calendar have behind its doors? Chocolate? Nah. I think minis and dice are more likely, and minis would be terribly expensive.
So, dice advent calendars have become synonymous with D&D advent calendars.
This year, I supported a local indie trader and pre-ordered mine from Beholder’s Gaze.
There are some alternatives. I’ve heard good things and see good reviews for Critical Treasure’s Dice Advent(ure) Calendar but was put off by the lack of photographs for the box.
Woodward Dice’s Dice Advent Calendar also ships from the UK, good for me, but we’re fast approaching the likely cut off point for any international orders given the global logistics mess and driver shortage in Britain.
Lastly, Tabletop Gaming Magazine sold theirs for £250 each and had very limited numbers. It wasn’t just dice behind the doors, but board game components.
So, will I get a D&D advent calendar?
I’ll be happily surprised if we ever get an official D&D advent calendar, at least a physical one.
I’m confident that despite the heavy lifting and risks involved for the retailer, we’ll get several good alternative dice options each year. We may well see tabletop miniature advent calendars as well.
