Guts & Glory is a tabletop RPG mashup of the raid dynamics of games like Monster Hunter with OSR hexcrawl elements.
In other words, your characters sally out to track and hunt dangerous dinners. The Kickstarter from Strange Frontier, a publisher who describe themselves as an “artist collective devoted to under-served exotica”, asked for a modest $500 or so and, with more than a month still to fund, easily hit that target. You can check out the latest total on the pitch page.
Guts & Glory is a Powered by the Apocalypse RPG. That means it uses six-sided dice that you’ll have laying around somewhere, and while it invokes old school styles, it is written so that total newcomers can easily pick it up.
The games’ “crafting system” means you scavenge for monsters, harvesting ingredients so that you can make items, quick snacks or more impressive meals.
Take one cup of inspiration from old-school tabletop gaming, and another from modern raiding games like Monster Hunter, and you’ve got the makings for exciting adventure. Do you rush your quarry, eager to reap quick rewards? Or do you spend time hunting it down to find its lair, its habits, its secret abilities? And what about those juicy side-quests, which offer rich rewards but also use up valuable time and resources? Each outing is rich with new challenges.
Helmed by Jason Holmgren, whom we talked to in the Sanguine Spotlight, Strange Frontier has a host of talented illustrators on board.
The early bird bids are still open, so you can get a digital copy, your name in the sponsors’ section and the option to upgrade to physical for $13. If you miss the early bird, that becomes $16.
You can get custom art made and added to those rewards, but these slots are limited in number and require a higher pledge. These art options start at $49 and go up to $149.
There’s no way to secure a physical copy with a pledge. You must start with digital and get the option to buy that upgrade to print later.
The estimated delivery of the project is December this year.
