In 9th Level’s Woman are Werewolves games, you play as a non-binary character, and only the women transform into werewolves.
It challenges gender roles like “men bring home the bacon” or “women are caregivers”. The Kickstarter asks for $9,900, and after the first 24 hours has about $7,500 pledged. You can see progress on the project page.
Non-binary characters are those who are not exclusively male or female. There’s science in this; intersex people are real, non-binary is broader than that and includes people who experience their gender as both, neither or something else.
In the setting, the game is centred around a family in which only the women turn into werewolves, and that’s a pretty profound gender role! It’s this twist the game explores.
What if, on the full moon, your family went deep into the wilds to the Family Home so the women could transform and roam the night while the men stayed at the house?
In a family with such specific gender roles, what if you were nonbinary and neither of those expectations felt right for you?
The game uses three phases;
- Werewolf
- Gender
- Family
In each phase, players answer prompt cards, with other players asking questions to flesh out those responses. Then, in the interludes, the other players tackle the same prompts.
The game comes with 20 rules cards (tarot-sized), one x-card, transformation milestone cards, 39 question cards, 10 interlude and epilogue cards, 10 wilderness locations and a box.
It takes about 5 minutes to explain the rules.
At $25, you get a t-shirt, but shipping is required, and only certain countries are supported.
It’s $30 for the game, which implicitly appears to be paper since shipping is required.
The game, t-shirt and two stickers are available at the $59 backer tier with the usual twists. And there’s a retailer tier.
Fulfilment is expected in July 2022.
