Since my facepalm moment and the discovery that signed books were not exclusive to long con queues and specialist auctions but could be bought with relative ease from retailers who organise them, I’ve been more vigilant.
I noticed two things.
Firstly, Forbidden Planet is getting Elvira: Mistress Of The Dark: The Classic Years: Omnibus: Volume 1 in hardcover.
Secondly, you can save £60 and pre-order the signed edition instead. It’s still a book that costs over £100, but it’s not snuggling up to £200 anymore.
There’s a catch. The signee is yet to be announced, and we don’t know what the signature will read.
In fact, nothing other than the price and the expected release date of 9th February has been revealed.
Well, assuming it’s the same book as the regular edition enhanced only with a relevant signature, we know it’s 600 pages long. That’s 26 comics plus a special two-thirds length bonus added by Dynamite.
That “two-thirds” bonus is cheekily but mathematically hard to argue with described as 0.666 of an issue. Volume 1 of the classic years edition contains 26.666 Elvira comics to recalculate.
The classic years are the 90s, Bill Clinton sits at the White House, and we had Jurassic Park dinosaurs finding a way in cinemas. Elvira was busy with stories of teen werewolves, aliens, pro-wrestling and the occasional killer clown when something really freaky was needed.
Batman’s Paul Dini was writing for the series, but this omnibus also includes the work of Kurt Busiek, Frank Stromand even Claypool Comics, the original publisher’s big cheese Richard Howell. Art comes from Tom Simonton and John Heebink.
The gamble is this. Will the price change when more details are revealed? Or will there be time between now and February when the pre-order discount is still there, still significant, but we know who’s signature is on the book? I’m new at this, don’t even dare speculate, but it’ll be interesting to watch and learn.
