The second trailer for The Deer King: The Promised Journey With Yuna has the news that the anime has been delayed again. It’s Covid-19’s fault.
Now Anime Limited aims to get the film to cinemas in the UK only if the situation permits, and the country has just gone up to Covid-19 alert level 4. GKIDS hopes to air it in North America in early 2022.
I’ve seen it, and there’s a review on Geek Native. The anime was nearly finished before the C19 outbreak, and it predicts so much of humankind’s responses.
In The Deer King, it’s the outbreak of a plague that stops one nation from fully entering and assimilating its neighbour, a country it has just defeated in war.
A story about cultural changes, two people beginning to mingle and change one another, takes on a whole new cast given the backdrop of our own crisis with an outbreak.
It didn’t win Scotland Loves Anime’s awards, but it was still popular. I recommend it.
Worth going to? The Deer King is fantasy escapism when we need it the most, and it is also a reality check when we need that too. As both GKIDS and Anime Limited are doing, it is worth hoping for the chance to see the visually stunning anime run the big screen. But only if it’s safe to do so.
