Over the last few days, I’ve been fortunate enough to share several top 20 lists of RPG products that were made available on DriveThruRPG this year, sorted into the genre their creators wanted and listed by sales volume.
Most recently, we looked at “miscellaneous” RPGs as the final category. We started with other fantasy. The complication was that previously, “other fantasy” meant not D&D, and yet Wizards of the Coast’s Minsc and Boo’s Journal of Villainy (5e) was there in second place. It’s certainly 5e but fell out of the official D&D classification.
Why? Ask Wizards. Team OBS checked for me and confirmed it wasn’t a mistake.
OneBookShelf (OBS) has other sites, one of which is the DMsGuild. It’s here you’ll find Wizards of the Coast’s 5e content along with community content created by third parties within the guidelines. Are you ready for this?

There you have it. Minsc and Boos Journal of Villainy (5e), again. Not a mistake. It’s listed by design, Wizards happy to classify it as appropriate for both sites, as only they may.
Then, in third place, WotC’s Domains of Delight (5e) which was also a charity product, one released to support The Wild Beyond the Witchlight from the publisher.
All this means that Monster Manual Expanded III (5E) has done incredibly well to secure second place. There’s clearly enough utility in this book to interest a wide range of D&D players.
Dread Metrol: Into the Mists – An Eberron / Ravenloft Crossover is in fourth place and the work of Keith Baker, the Eberron creator, with Andrew Bishkinskyi and Imogen Gingell with many talented artists also attached to the product.
You don’t need to know Ravenloft to use Dread Metrol, but this mighty city of Khorvaire, but with the supplement, you could incorporate some elements of that realm into the Eberron one.
Realms and supplements do well in the chart, with other books there mentioning the Feywild and Ravenloft or supporting official expansions such as Ythryn Expanded Towers of Magic Bundle – maps and extra content for Rime of the Frostmaiden and Tashas Crucible of Everything Else Volume 2

Thanks to OneBookShelf and the DMsGuild team for making all this possible. I asked awkward questions about Boo!
The chart above does not list “the best”; it’s one cut on sales data. The best third-party content out there is the one you find most useful and so entirely subjective. There are rules which govern what can be sold and where when it comes to the official community content program and it is worth noting that much great D&D content is created and given away for free.
