I found this 3rd edition copy of Steve Jackson Games’ Knightmare Chess on ebay with an asking price of $335. It was one of a few on auction with similar prices.
The game has been out of print for years and combines cards with chess to break the rules in, yes, nightmarish ways! You need a chess set to play; the game only provides the card and the addition of the new rules.
You can pre-order the game from Warehouse 23 already, and that’ll cost $34.95 only, about 10% of the eBay auction.
Steve Jackson Games is well aware of what a new reprint will do to the second-hand market. Phil Reed’s write-up of the news says;
Skip the after-market prices — which have gotten out of control recently — and add a new, factory-fresh copy of the game to your collection!
Of course, there is a difference in buying a collectable early or rare edition from eBay than purchasing the latest reprint Amazon. Now, though, there’s the option to do either.
