At Noble Knight, The Classic Dungeons and Dragons Game costs $175 and battered copies sometimes pop up on ebay for much less. Today, you can also buy the 1st edition Basic/Expert ruleset of 128-pages for $8.95 from DriveThruRPG.
Wizards and OBS have been busy scanning old D&D properties for digital this year. Based on previous experience but without guarantee, if you’re willing to wait long enough, print-on-demand versions of this upload will become available later.
The box set was originally published in 1994 by TSR to support the Basic Dungeons & Dragons original product line.
You won’t get the physical parts with the PDF, but the 1994 version came with 6 moulded figures. In addition, there were 24 standup counters for monsters, a 6-panel DM screen (because 3-panels is apparently not enough), dice and a large dungeon poster map.
The blurb for the game reads;
…the dragon lunges. Your flashing blade slices the air as searing flames burst over your shield. A lightning bolt crackles from the wizard’s fingertips, then bounces harmlessly off the ancient beast’s scarred and scaly hide. Will you stay and battle this deadly monster, or leave it behind with its hoard of stolen treasure.
DriveThruRPG’s system says the file was updated into their system last April but added only to the public catalogue today. Based on those time stamps, I think it’s fair to call this a re-release in PDF.
If anyone else has spotted the new arrival, which is likely, no one has yet left a star rating or review, and some of the recent scans have been getting mixed reviews. In part, though, in frustration of a lack of print-on-demand version.
