The Orr Group, the people who own Roll20, report which roleplaying games are most popular on their virtual tabletop throughout the year.
The latest, quarter four of 2021, is out now, and you won’t be surprised to know that D&D 5e is the most popular. The questions really come after that? How is Pathfinder doing, is Call of Cthulhu still popular and what about that always-there wildcard in the shape of Tormenta?
System | Campaigns | Accounts |
---|---|---|
D&D 5e | 54.84% | 60.03% |
Uncategorized | 15.21% | 13.70% |
Call of Cthulhu (any edition) | 9.23% | 5.84% |
Pathfinder | 3.33% | 3.56% |
Pathfinder Second Edition | 1.41% | 1.47% |
Warhammer (Fantasy, 40K, Wrath & Glory) | 0.93% | 0.96% |
World of Darkness (Vampire, Werewolf, Mage) | 0.89% | 0.85% |
D&D 3.5 | 0.80% | 0.82% |
Tormenta | 0.62% | 0.64% |
Star Wars (any system) | 0.48% | 0.49% |
Compare to Q3 2021, there’s a small increase for D&D 5e and a dip for “Uncategorized”, which are often homebrew.
Call of Cthulhu has dropped quite a bit, but still is the second most played (Campaigns) named RPG system and Pathfinder 1e has grown a little, as has Warhammer and Tormenta.
Roll20 have big news themselves with co-founder and CEO Nolan T Jones stepping aside to be replaced by ex-Googler Ankit Lal.
