New in the DMsGuild’s collection of D&D third party content there’s Carinn Gaspar’s The Book of Backgrounds (Edition One).
Edition One is free, suggesting that Carinn has plans for future books, that won’t be. Also known as Sparkletinkercat, the designer makes their debut to the DMsGuild with the download.
The 8-page PDF has 5 custom backgrounds and art by Nikola Avramovic, also making their debut, and looks pretty good.
Those 5 custom backgrounds for 5e are;
- Animal Handler
- Arborist
- Beekeeper
- Bird Catcher
- Herder
Each background has an introduction, looks at a set of themed skills and items. For example, the Animal Handler is proficiencies in animal handling (surprise) and then either Nature, Survival or Medicine, plus a tool proficiency and a language.
In addition, there’s a small table of suggested personality traits, bonds, and flaws for each background. The animal handler again, for example, could be someone who can’t stand unnecessary harm to animals (a trait), who looks after several saved animals (a bond) and who wakes up early, waking others as they get up (a flaw).
