Game And A Curry, a small box publisher based in the States, has Banana Chan and Austin Taylor on board with a GMless horror RPG illustrated by Amanda Kahl.
How does that work? Well, Deimos Academy uses a colouring book as a mechanic. The players are adults returning for a get together at their old school only to find they’re the only people there. The game needs $15k to fund and you can find out or join from the pledge page.
While the characters are attending a reunion at school, it becomes clear that none of them has clear memories of what happened there.
In Deimos Acamedy, the characters have to unlock what happened and discover a lurking monster. It’s a game that comes with a content warning for the supernatural, childhood trauma, drugs, sexism, and authority abuse.
The colouring book can be adapted should any of the items be off-limits to players, with a full sheet of alternative visuals to be cut out, placed over the offending image and glued in place.
Another catch is that shipping outside of the USA or Canada is too expensive, and so if you’re not native to either of those two countries, you’ll have to settle for the PDF copy. However, the Kickstarter story has many videos of people playing the game digitally and remotely with friends.
If you are reading this, then congratulations on being part of the prestigious history of Deimos Academy. A prestigious institution, the roots of which can be traced back to the 16th century, Deimos Academy is one of the longest operating schooling institutions that offers housing in a traditional boarding school style. Deimos students range from as young as 8 while some of our senior students are as old as 18. We have a preschool program as well but do not worry the little tykes do not stick around after programming is done for the day. Some of the world’s most powerful people have graced our halls, from celebrities to technology geniuses; and if they didn’t go here then consider yourself lucky to have received a better education than they did. We look forward to seeing you again. An Alumni Liaison will be in contact soon for your tour. Remember: Excellence Always.
A pledge of $15 is sufficient to enjoy PDF copies of the Deimos Academy Yearbook PDF and the Rulebook PDF. You also get gaming aids formatted for Google Slides, a free and powerful online collaboration tool.
Backers in the USA or Canada who pledge $35 will get the Deimos Academy box set but still have shipping to pay.
At $65, backers get two copies of everything, and retailers at $90 will receive six box sets but no PDFs.
There’s a limited tier, about to sell out, with an art print, a metal bookmark, a notebook, patch, and a backpack.
A BackerKit planned and fulfilment is scheduled for February 2023.
