Komi is an intelligent, thoughtful, tall and stunning young woman. She appears to swan into class and distains from talking to anyone, and her Japanese classmates love her for it. This is elegance; this is how to behave with decorum.
It’s not what it seems, though. Komi suffers from horrible social anxiety, and she’s not being “above” anyone by not communicating; she just can’t bring herself to do it.
While the anime is full of comedy, the social anxiety is not, and the anime’s narrator often clarifies just how serious an issue it is. And it’s an issue that Komi’s first friend tries to help with as they set about trying to recruit 99 more.
It’s a rare anime trailer in which the lack of English sub or dub seems not to matter. In fact, without the context of understanding what’s been said, many of the scenes are open to comedic interpretation. It works for Komi.
We can tell from the trailer that we’re meeting new friends, or potential friends, as some seem a bit angry or intense. And some of the friends, get this, appear to be male. That bucks the season 1 trend exception for our heroic exception.
We won’t have long to wait as Netflix launches Komi Can’t Communicate in Japan on the 7th. Surely a worldwide launch won’t be terribly far behind. Right?
