Andi Licht’s Between Clouds is a colourful, queer and biopunk tabletop RPG about life on board on a flying beast.
These beasts, the Kirin, are not loved by most people. They’re feared, hunted and their beating hearts are used to power flying machines. PCs are different; they are Symbiotes, they are connected to a Kirin.
The Kickstarter community loves the pitch and with weeks to go, the campaign is several times over goal, and you can join in from the pitch page.
Linking with a Kirin changes a person, boosting their senses and healing powers and giving them bestial traits. These PCs have a Power and a Mutation.
It’s Free League’s Mutant: Year Zero game engine that Between Clouds uses. That’s a system focused on narrative, uses d6 and demands consequences for failure.
Symbiotes are forsaken by society. People fear them, shun them, or wish to use them for personal gain. Because of this, these stylish mutants are beholden to no laws or codes. They act on their own will and present themselves accordingly. Fashionable clothing, dazzling accessories, and vibrant hair are all ways that Symbiotes embody their unique personalities. Empyrea’s elite use these eccentricities to stoke moral panics about the lawlessness of roaming Symbiotes, although most people will find this to be little more than propaganda if they encounter one.
Backers who support Between Clouds with pledges of $12 or more will get a PDF of the core rules as a reward.
To assist the project, those who can find $27, which is about £21, will also get a softcover copy. That’s about 200 pages in a 6″ by 9″ format, shipping costs need to be added later, but it’ll be sent anywhere that’s required.
Backers at the $39 level get the hardcover copy of the rulebook, instead of the softcover. A Kickstarter exclusive edition is switched in for backers at $59 and their name is added to the rulebook too.
The top tier is at £299, including multiple limited editions, beta access and behind the scenes content.
The project is expected to fulfil in March 2023.
