Makoto Shinkai, the director responsible for the fantastic anime Your Name and The Weathering With You, has a new project. It’s called Suzume no Tojimari; we’ve a teaser trailer for it. It explores some familiar themes and looks terrific.
As the trailer makes clear, Suzume no Tojimari will air in Japan on November 11th this year!
What do I find so powerful about the trailer? Not just the beauty of the animation nor even the promise of more Makoto. I’m a fan of the ruins and the magic. There’s hope wrapped around failure there.
The official synopsis reads like poetry.
On the other side of the door, was time in its entirety—
17-year-old Suzume’s journey begins in a quiet town in Kyushu when she encounters a young man who tells her, “I’m looking for a door.” What Suzume finds is a single weathered door standing upright in the midst of ruins as though it was shielded from whatever catastrophe struck. Seemingly mesmerized by its power, Suzume reaches for the knob…
Doors begin to open one after another all across Japan, unleashing destruction upon any who are near. Suzume must close these portals to prevent further disaster.

The morning skyWithin that realm, it was as though all time had melted together in the sky–
Drawn in by this mysterious door, Suzume’s journey is about to begin.
We can speculate the feature-length will likely make it to the West, but the details will matter and are yet to come.
