I was surprised by how much I like Netflix’s gambling anime Kategurui. It is set in a posh school where everything revolves around the power play of hardcore gambling.
It works for many reasons. Intense gambling, which is often anime-odd scenarios, becomes episodic face-offs. Oh, and the faces. These are the elite, and so are gorgeous people, but the animators do a fantastic shop of showing the greed, the desire, the horror and fear on their faces.
We won’t see the main character from Kategurui in this spin-off as it’s a prequel. IMDB note;
A year before Yumeko Jabami graced the hallowed halls of Hyakkou Private Academy, Mary Saotome got her own start at the gambling-addicted school. Can this normal girl achieve her own rags-to-riches story through wits and luck?
Mary Saotome is the same sadist that we meet in the main series. Her arc there is somewhat transformative, and in Twin, we see more of her personal history.
The series is due on Netflix in August by the Remind Me page is live. On it, Netflix say;
Determined to climb up the social ladder, Mary Saotome invests everything she has into what her elite high school values most: high stakes gambling.
While Netflix is getting the show in August, it is running in Japan, and there’s a live-action so spoilers and reviews abound.
