It was two years ago we had the first The Summit of the Gods trailer on Geek Native. It was late then, having first been unveiled in 2015 and then promised for 2021.
Well! Life happened. That seems to be a state of affairs appropriate to the power of nature in The Summit of the Gods.
The French-directed anime finally reached a summit as it releases in Japan early in July.
The feature-length is based on the manga by Jiro Taniguchi which, in turn, is based on the novel by Baku Yumemakura. That novel won awards but also inspired a live-action movie some years ago.
The characters in it, a lone climber called Jobi Habu and a cameraman named Makoto Fukamachi, try an oxygen-free ascent of the southwest face of Mount Everest, and that’s considered to be impossible.
Given the plot, it seems entirely appropriate the anime has had to overcome so much to finally get a proper release.
