Amazon will release Samaritan on August 26th, and it’ll star the 76-year-old Sylvester Stallone as a retired, faded and jaded superhero.
The movie, directed by Julius Avery (Overlord, Dead Snow 2), also features Javon Walton and Pilou Abaek.
A young boy learns that a superhero who was thought to have gone missing after an epic battle twenty years ago may in fact still be around.
Are we getting tired of superhero movies? Samaritan suggests superheroes might be getting tired of us.
Sly plays Mr Smith and, in this trailer, easily manages to bring to life a tired man and also a super-powered man.
Samaritan director Julius Avery grew up in the 80s and told press;
We didn’t really have superheroes. We only had action heroes. And Sly was the closest thing we had to a superhero. So to put him in a superhero movie? That feels fresh and cool and something that people will get a kick out of.”
The Amazon Prime listing reads;
Thirteen-year-old Sam Cleary (Javon “Wanna” Walton) suspects that his mysterious and reclusive neighbor Mr. Smith (Sylvester Stallone) is actually a legend hiding in plain sight. Twenty five years ago, Granite City’s super powered vigilante, Samaritan, was reported dead after a fiery warehouse battle with his rival, Nemesis. Most believe Samaritan perished in the fire, but some in the city, like Sam, have hope that he is still alive. With crime on the rise and the city on the brink of chaos, Sam makes it his mission to coax his neighbor out of hiding to save the city from ruin.
Stallone has played superheroes before, although easy to miss. He was King Shark in The Suicide Squad and Starhawk in Guardians of the Galaxy 2, a role he is expected to return to in Guardians of the Galaxy 3. Okay, Stallone has played super-villains and anti-heroes before.
