The Kickstarter pitch video from Nathan Rockwood quickly reveals how a pack of specially designed Cyberpunk RPG/worldbuilding cards could create 1.7 million NPCs.
The concept isn’t limited to NPCs, though, as the cards are all about helping GMs with a host of content. The phrase used is “AI GameMaster”. You can read more or back at the pitch page.
There’s history here. Previous products from Nathan, aka Larcenous Designs, have done very well. The GameMaster’s Apprentice: Base Deck is a mithral bestseller, and you can check out the reviews here. In numbers, after 104 ratings, almost a perfect 5/5 star score.
You can download a free demo of the Cyberpunk deck to check it out before pledging. The demo has 18 cards, and the final version will have 120.
Notably, the Kickstarter is to pay for the artists, so we’re art light for now.
The GameMaster’s Apprentice (GMA) decks help plan and run tabletop role playing games–in any system, genre, or world–by providing everything from randomized story seeds, encounters, and NPCs, to the results of a pickpocketing roll or a perception check.
With more than a dozen randomizers on each card and 120 cards in each deck, the range of content is incredible; drawing just three cards can produce more than 1.7 million unique NPCs or random events. For those interested in solo- or GM-free gaming, the GMA decks can even be used as a game engine, moving the action forward the same way a human GM would.
There’s a No Questioned Asked Discount tier, which is excellent, and $1 gets you the PDF and access to the print-on-demand coupon (which means spending money later). Nearly 30 people have taken that option.
If you’re not financially struggling and want to support the creator, the core pledge is $10 for the Cyberpunk Deck and beta access. That’ll also get you POD and Discord supporter channel access.
There are higher tiers, such as $25 to secure this and all previous decks as PDFs for your supporter rewards.
At $45, you get print-on-demand coupons for the lot, but you’ll still have to pay the shipping on those.
The top tier is $150, with perks around helping to create the content and talking to Nathan.
Irrespective of the tier you pick to support, delivery is slated for much later on and in September 2023, and this should give the artists enough time.
