Zavvi is a success story, and I can trace its origins back through The Hut Group to Virgin Megastores. It was Virgin Megastores here in the UK that, decades ago, first put tabletop RPGs on the high street.
You’d be able to end three flour buildings from Edinburgh’s Princess Street, in the shadow of the castle, move through shelves of vinyl and then CDs, explore into the basement, through the posters and then into a small collection of books and trading cards. Later, Waterstones did the same thing.
The internet and ecommerce changed the high street forever. Waterstones retreated, was saved a few times, and Virgin Megastores was bought out, rebranded and became online only. That brand? Zavvi.
The transformation created an entity which “reflected the pride and passion of the company“, and the identity was created by an agency called Caulder Moore. Now, the Zavvi brand has turned 12.
The birthday event ends this weekend and doesn’t have a RPG section. Instead, there’s;
- Launches such as Beastars soundtrack or the Middle-Earth: The Ultimate Collector’s Edition.
- 4k< Blu-ray and DVDs with Steelbooks, film launches and clearances.
- MerchandiseClothing for their Akedos partnerships, t-shirts and Stranger Things bundles.
- Vinyl for frames, price drops but also related merch.
- Toys which includes Pops, Lego and board games.
- Gifts and there’s geeky lighting in here, offers and even doormats.

Zavvi also has a native program for telling your friends about their offers. You get cash for doing this, provided your friends then go on to buy stuff.
For the birthday, Zavvi is paying you double for your geeky friend finding.
