I only remembered it was Star Trek Day because Just Geek has a lot of merch to sell, has it on sale, and emailed to tell me so.
Actually, I had to pop over to Star Trek.com and confirm. Yes, sure enough, the video won’t load, but the official site does agree that September 8th, 2022 is Star Trek Day.
That’s minus one geek point for me.
The Star Trek Day schedule begins with welcome remarks and then moves on to;
- Segment 2 – Star Trek: Picard
- Segment 3 – Star Trek: Discovery
- Segment 4 – Star Trek: Lower Decks
- Segment 5 – Star Trek: Prodigy
- Segment 6 – Nichelle Nichols Tribute
- Segment 7 – Star Trek: Strange New Worlds
Supporting the event is new content from David Haddon, who writes for the site. How Star Trek Embraces Those Who Society Shuns is a fan’s dive into non-binary identity representation. David writes;
As a non-binary person, “The Serene Squall” means a lot to me. In the episode, non-binary actress Jesse James Keitel appears as Dr. Aspen, a character with they/them pronouns and it isn’t treated as a big deal.
Meanwhile, back at Just Geek we’ll see far less important topics getting the Star Trek treatment. That’s not to say merch isn’t part of the Star Trek experience, it’s perhaps just not what the diversity-minded Gene Roddenberry out of bed in the morning.
Let’s take a look.
Star Trek rubber ducks
It’s a sign of the times that one of the lead items to sell this Star Trek Day are rubber ducks.
Oh sure, these are Star Trek Tubbz, which means you can bathe with a borg, but they’re still ducks!
JustGeek has 13 different Star Trek Tubbz, including one in a strange Q-tent hat.
JustGeek also says you can win a Marine Sirtis signed Tubbz by joining their club. The link goes to Facebook, so I explored it no further.
Star Trek cosplaying cups
If rubber ducks cosplaying as Star Trek characters wasn’t strangely nerdy enough, Just Geek also has cups cosplaying as the sci-fi characters.
These beakers are known as CosCups, and they’re missing the tops of their heads because they’re actually cups. I bet that wasn’t how you expected to interact with Picard.
I guess you can sip bubbly from a borg beaker while bathing with a borg in the bath.
More Star Trek
There’s other merch, too, such as the ugly Christmas sweater, a wallet, models, badge and games. Phew.
