Singer and songwriter Alison Wonderland is publishing a graphic novel called Loner, which comes with an RPG module.
Co-writing the book is Z2 Comics co-founder Sridhar Reddy. Alex Heywood has done the cover and Minomiyabi, Alex Heywood, Kelsey Ramsay, BRÄO, and Taylan Kurtulus, do the interior art.
The project explores the themes of isolation and redemption that ran throughout Wonderland’s third full-length album of the same name, which was released in May. After undergoing devastating life changes, Wonderland experienced a deep quiet that corresponded with the global pandemic, allowing the musician to contemplate and find empowerment in the following months.
The adventure module comes with character sheets and a map, but Z2 has not mentioned the system.
Loner is a psychedelic personal journey in which the DJ and musician channel themselves into an alternative dimension where they find conflict, bullying, anxiety, metaphysical monsters and sci-fi encounters.
Sridhar Reddy told the press;
At Z2 we’ve always felt the best stories, no matter how fantastical or out there they may be, have to always come from a place of genuine truth. Working with Alison on this project was a gift to the creative team because, like her music, she was truthful and open to the story she wanted to tell. It’s very much her emotional journey, and we count ourselves fortunate to be on this ride with her.”
Alison Wonderland explained how things have changed since 2018 and their last record.
My life was going a certain way before something pulled everything out from under me. It left me entirely alone, and it all happened around the same time as COVID. I felt like I had hit my rock bottom.”
She began to ruminate on the beginnings of her third album, Loner, having always resorted to music to process. She revisited her albums for the first time in a long time, much like rereading the pages of old diaries.
I realized that I have always seen myself as the victim of my story. This time, something shifted in me, and I decided that I didn’t want to be the victim anymore. Instead, whatever I wrote from here would empower me, and help me find strength in this loneliness.”
