Raphael D’Amcio has a runaway Kickstarter on their hands with The Zone, as there’s a month for the project to run, and the target of $10,000 is well and truly in the distance with nearly $100,000 pledged.
The Zone RPG suggests you play in the dark with glow sticks and play to lose. You can see details and investigate why gamers are lured to this novel proposition on the pitch page. Or you can play for free right now.
The Zone pitches five reasons to give the game a go. Raphael says;
- You get to make your own horrors.
- There’s zero prep (and ideal for beginners).
- The game is different each time.
- Stats don’t matter.
- It’s spooky in the dark.
I think the bonus point of the stunning holographic foil cards, which are available at all tiers, applies too.
Characters are made in just a few minutes and defined by their greatest fears and desires so that the game can then push into that shape and challenge them.
It’s a horror, not fantasy escapism, and you’re encouraged to go into knowing your fate is already sealed. One person only will survive as the Zone mutates people.
You can play the game, for free, right now. That’s the pre-pandemic digital version. The Kickstarter is for the physical edition.
The 40 physical location cards are, by the way, enough for 2,763,633,600 possible permutations of zones.
Welcome, volunteers. I know you’ve all been wondering what The Zone really is, and if the rumors are true. As the 14th expedition, you deserve to know what we know. It’s not a lot. But it may help you. It all started with the anomalies. Locals calling in to talk radio or visiting their doctors with stories of unseasonal weather; impossible objects; half-sightings of unknown creatures; claimed conversations with long dead loved ones. People disappeared. Medical notes describe bodies that started… changing.”
As usual, you can help an indie RPG by sharing the news on social media.
Backers who have $25 to offer can unlock the complete digital set. That’s the Operation Manual, Book of Mutation, Book of Twists (all in PDF) and the print and play assets for the cards.
If it’s the impressive 9x2x6″ box with the printed operations manual, 100+ tarot-sized foil cards and 100+ Scene, Not So Easy and Fate cards, then that’ll take a pledge of $59. Shipping will be worked out after.
The complete set, adding in the print versions of the Book of Mutation and Book of Twists, with some new cards, required a pledge of $79.
A $199 Containment Edition, with a custom case, glowsticks, print of characters, an exclusive sticker back, and the physical set, is also luring in the backers.
The digital version has a March 2023 estimated delivery date, while the physical kits are likely a few months later and in May.
