Need Games’ tabletop RPG inspired by Japanese-style computer roleplaying games Fabula Ultima will debut at Essen Spiel this week.
However, the free to download quickstart, which Need Games are calling a “Press Start” edition, is available from DriveThruRPG now.
The RPG will be 360 full-colour pages, and buying the physical book will get you the PDF. The quickstart is 52-pages, which is generous for a free download.
Those 52-pages will be enough to go through a ready-to-play scenario that acts as a tutorial for the game. There are pre-genned characters and the ‘Load Game’ booklet to take you into creating your own game.
Creating your own game is a crucial part of Fabula Ultima, and the complete rules help you do that, offering three different styles of worldbuilding.
The launch edition will have 15 classes based on video games and group types. The RPG engine, designed by Emanuele Galletto, is billed as simple and intuitive while invoking that JRPG vibe.
Italy’s Need Games have the local licenses for The One Ring, Warhammer, Vampire, Kids on Bikes, 7th Sea, Dune, Labyrinth, Fallout, Achtung! Cthulhu and Cyberpunk RED.
