Mythic Grove, co-founded by Elise Rezendes and Gabe Hicks, is crowdfunding a gamified way to build connected backstories for your PCs in the important session zero of an RPG.
It’s an ambitious campaign with a target of $50,000. There’s still a month to go, and they’ve earned around 500 backers and are more than halfway there with over $25,000 pledged. You can see their current progress or back at Kickstarter.
The Session Zero System uses a three-part approach to character generation together.
Part 1 discusses TTRPG Safety Tools, how to break down the rules in a TTRPG as a table, and how to align your party’s expectations from the outset.
Part 2 sets your party’s lore, tone, mood, and house rules. We’ve incorporated some of our favourites to make each game distinctive and discussed best practices for customising.
Part 3 is where Mythic provides suggestions for your table to flesh up unique character origins with our Story Paths and further instructions to flush out different intertwining elements between other players and the greater universe around your adventures.
What parts of this world do you call home? Who are the people you come from and call family? What figures have you met along the way that have made the biggest impact on your life so far…was it for good or ill? What events, great or small, have led you to take the path you now find your feet walking on?
There are limited community copies available. If you don’t need one, the tiers include a $10 pledge to get a PDF copy of the whole Session Zero System, which comes in colour and as a printer friendly version.
There’s an art book, some 70 pages with prompts and all the rules you’ll find in the digital rules. That’s added to the rewards for people who can pledge $35 or more.
At $45, backers can get the digital rules and a 60-card fragment deck with prompts.
The all-in bundle sets you back $85, about £78, with the art book, fragment deck and digital PDF. However, all physical tiers need shipping added, and only some countries are supported.
There are higher tiers with $130 offering more than a single art book, handy if you want many people at the gaming table to have one. There are also multiples at $160, $300, and $350 and then a jump to $1,500 for a host of goodies and a session with the gaming influencer Gabe Hicks.
Is that the end of the story? Community contributions can be found in the comment section at the end of the page.
