I liked the first edition of Angry Hamster’s Witch: Fated Souls but did not predict there would be a second edition. Six years later, that’s what we’ve got.
Liz Chaipraditkul, Steffie de Vaan, and the team have brought the urban tabletop RPG in which people have sold their souls to a demon to Kickstarter for Halloween. Despite this being a night when people are out and about, the launch has gone very well, with nearly 100 backers already, and you can see the current figure from the pitch page.
If you want to dive in, or perhaps you’re looking for some very last-minute Halloween content, there’s a free to download quickstart. The suggested price is $0, but you can pay what you want.
The quick start offers an overview of the setting, enough mechanics to play, seven pre-genned characters and the adventure “The Devil Made Me Do It”.
Angry Hamster Publishing has had a good run since the original Witch, and we see some of these learnings in Witch 2e. The game now uses an RPG engine based on those in Afterlife: Wandering Souls.
Here’s the pitch;
Witch: Fated Souls 2e is a game about the claustrophobia of making a dire deal you didn’t fully comprehend, how you navigate the deal now that it is sealed, and about the supernatural world. It’s focused on each Fated’s personal story, how they overcome the shortcomings placed upon them, and how they thrive. It is ultimately a game about hope.
During the game you’ll navigate your daily life, alongside your coven, while discovering what it means to be a witch. You’ll encounter supernatural creatures who may seek to harm humanity and you’ll use your magic to help.
You can share the indie RPG by telling friends about the campaign or sharing it on social media, and Halloween feels like an appropriate time to do both. The timing, I’m sure, is deliberate.
However, if you can spare €19 (about £17), you’ll get a PDF copy of the game as a thank-you for that money in support and digital stretch goals.
At €40, you’ll also get a physical copy of the book. Angry Hamster is based in the Netherlands, and this actual book can be shipped around the world.
There’s a €65 tier, too, with dice, a dice bag and quick references added in. That’s just the start of the ramp-up, though, at €95, there’s also the Devil’s Deck and the Devil’s Zine, while at €175 you’ll also get other Angry Hamster games in your rewards. Those other games are Afterlife: Wandering Souls, a supplement for it and Familiars of Terra.
There is a retailer tier, and Liz and the team estimate delivery of the project in October next year. Ah, Halloween 2023; I wonder what the fancy dress trends of next year will be!
