John Thompson is an RPG designer pushing into helming their own project and has taken to Kickstarter for Gutterpunk to do that.
Gutterpunk is a tabletop RPG set across dimensions and with a destructive force known as Authority is opposed by magic and music from people with attitude. The project has hit its funding goal and has three weeks left for people to join.
Gutterpunk is part isekai, and that’s a phrase Geek Native’s anime readers will know. Isekai is a genre which describes manga/anime in which the hero comes from one world to another. The other part of Gutterpunk is Wonderland.
The characters in Gutterpunk band together to survive and overcome the odds through music and attitude. John writes that the punk culture is about blurring the line between reality and art, which the game tries to do too.
Gutterpunk uses the RIFF system, a new engine that uses d6s, dice pools and meet-or-beat challenges.
You’re not entirely sure how you got here – but magically and mystically you came to a world people call the Gutter. At first glance you’d normally think this land was not too different from where you’re from with its roads, buildings, and industrial sprawl but this world is a twisted tale with its out-of-place denizens and the fact that the only “humans” are the punks of Earth who have also stumbled upon the Gutter. The monsters don’t hide under the bed in this world and while you should be terrified, you’ve got the magic of the Riff and a stomp in your step that’s going to shake the foundations of The Gutter to its core!
A pledge of $10 is enough to unlock the core rules in PDF, plus an accessible version; there are also gamer aid tables in PDF and a form-fillable character sheet.
The softback is added to the rewards, but shipping is restricted to select countries at $25.
Some tiers have sold out, and the next to go will be the $125 ‘Make an Impression!’ tier which gets you the softback and the chance to create a character for the book.
John estimates a delivery of July 2023 for the project.
