Daniel Sell’s Troika! is very popular among those in the know and science-fantasy and is a surreal, weird fantasy. There have already been Kickstarters and gorgeous books, and Sell is honest; you don’t need this edition if you have an older one.
You might want it, though, as it’s correct, gorgeous and desirable. There’s no PDF and only a short run on Kickstarter.
The Melsonian Arts Council, the company Daniel runs, will publish a core book with 36 character backgrounds, unique spells and enemies. Troika does not have much in the way of lore and, instead, brings its setting to life with the flavour text in backgrounds (such as lobotomised aristocrats) and other system highlights.
There’s also a tutorial adventure to get the GM and players up to speed.
The world of TROIKA! will be instantly familiar to anyone who has enjoyed classic New Wave fantasy and sci-fi works such as Dying Earth, Viriconium, Jerry Cornelius, Fighting Fantasy and Book of the New Sun. But if you’re not? Well there are no long essays explaining the setting or lore, everything you need to know and enjoy the world is tucked away inside the items, spell, enemies and backgrounds. Before you even realise it you’ll be speaking weird fiction fluently.
Backers can support the project by sharing it on social media or pledging cash. Those who can commit £12 will get a softback version as a thank you.
Impressively, there’s a signed version by Daniel Sell and artists Andrew Walter and Shuyi Zhang for £16.
At £20, a deepcut background booklet is added to the signed copy.
Art collectors can pony up £595 for the booklet, signed copy and original Andrew Walter artwork.
The Melsonian Arts Council estimate February for delivery.
