The Walking Dead Universe Roleplaying Game is on its way, and it is coming to us from AMC Networks via the trusted hands of Free League Publishing.
The two companies have announced a long-term alliance.
The TV series is wrapping up with its usual dramatic flare, and the tabletop RPG will head to Kickstarter in the Spring of 2023.
The crowdfunding campaign is expected to include a Core Rulebook, a Starter Set and exclusives. These bonuses will not be made available later or as part of a limited run.
The two companies describe the game as a co-production, with Chief Content Officer of The Walking Dead Universe, Scott M. Gimple, and Mike Zagari, Head of AMC Networks Publishing, involved. Therefore the RPG will draw on new stories from current and upcoming shows.
Scott told the press;
The Walking Dead has always been about characters – and audiences, by extension – facing impossible life and death choices. Now, fans can face these choices head on, putting themselves in the world of the Walking Dead – at any time in the timeline, encountering familiar faces and places and brand-new ones and, within our apocalypse, making the biggest choice: Who are you going to be? We’ve seen a lot of stories in the Walking Dead Universe, now it’s time to see yours.”
On the Free League side, Tomas Härenstam (Alien, Blade Runner) and Nils Karlén, the company co-founders, are involved, with Nils Hintze (Tales from the Loop, Vaesen) as lead writer, Gustaf Ekelund (Twilight: 2000) and Martin Grip (Alien, Blade Runner) as lead artists, and Genuine Entertainment’s Joe LeFavi (Alien, Blade Runner, Dune, The Dragon Prince) as producer and brand manager on the game series.
The game will be based on the Year Zero engine.
LeFavi noted;
Just like the show, this game is not about killing walkers. It’s not about losing health points and fighting to stay alive. It’s about losing your humanity and fighting to find and protect what’s worth living, killing, and dying for.”
