Kaina of the Great Snow Sea will air on January 11th with Crunchyroll carrying it outside Asia.
If the visual style reminds you of Knights of Sidonia and Blame! there is good reason for that. The Great Snow is a collab between Polygon Pictures and the manga artist Tsutomu Nihei who worked on Sidonia.
It’s a post-apocalyptic high fantasy with a sea of snow steadily covering the land. Survivors have retreated up into the “Tenmaku”. If “Tenmaku” sounds a bit like tent, then, yep, it’s wordplay for the Japanese word for tent. In the anime, the Tenmaku stretches between giant Orbital Trees.
The story itself is described as boy-meets-girls, but if the trailer is representative, then boy-meets-girl, then they go climbing up vertigo-inducing cliffs and fight snow pirates and samurai steampunk warriors.
There’s a manga launching afterwards in February, and Crunchyroll will have that too.
Studio GReeeeN is putting together Kaina of the Great Snow Sea with Ajin: Demi-Human director Hiroaki directing, Yoshimasa Hosoya as the boy Kaina and Rie Takahashi as Liliha.
