Meguey and Vincent Barker are designers with loads of geek street cred, with designs like Apocalypse World, Psi*Run and Under Hollow Hills in their impressive portfolio.
The team brought an expanded version of the storytelling The Wolf King’s Son to Kickstarter where it was funded quickly. You’re not the son the King expected but you can back the game, or find out more, from the pitch page.
The coming-of-age social game is about danger and identity, about the world of adults being more complicated than the one you grew up in.
The Wolf King’s Son is not the only character; there’s even a raven fairy. However, each play episode is a single adventure or story, and the Wolf King’s Son is the main character. Like some TV shows, though, The Wolf King’s Son does not need the main character to be in every episode.
The book will come in at about 100 pages of digest-size paper and is designed to sit next to Under Hollow Hills.
You are the Wolf King’s Son, for good and bad. Your father is the Wolf King of Winter, the werewolf, the war-wolf, father of terror and of orphans. You left his court with hard words and now you’re on your own, afoot, in fairyland.
There are support tiers for people who are struggling with cash. At $20, for those who can afford it and wish to back the campaign, you’ll be rewarded with a digital copy of the RPG.
It’s just a step up to $35 to get the print version of the social game, but there are higher tiers.
At $150, there’s a Powered by the Apocalypse Creator Pay-it-Back. Lumpley Games don’t ask people creating PbtA games to pay royalties, but if you do and fancy this game (or even if not) and can afford it, you can pledge $150. It’s an option, and several people have taken it.
You can do the same at $1,500.
The new The Wolf King’s Son’s digital edition is due in July, and the print in August 2023.
