Kaiju No. 8. is a bit of a whirlwind hit! The first manga was published half way through 2020 and had to be reprinted twice due to demand. By 2021 there were more than 4 million copies in circulation, a record for Shonen Jump+ manga.
Now there’s an anime on the way, but things are moving faster than Production I.G. (of Ghost in the Shell) might want so we won’t see anything of the Kaiju man next year. Kaiju No. 8 is slated for a 2024 release.
If you watched through the no-subtitle trailer, you’ll have an idea of the twist. Viz Media publish an English-translated manga and describe the first volume;
Kafka hopes to one day keep his pact with his childhood friend Mina to join the Japan Defense Force and fight by her side. But while she’s out neutralizing kaiju as Third Division captain, Kafka is stuck cleaning up the aftermath of her battles. When a sudden rule change makes Kafka eligible for the Defense Force, he decides to try out for the squad once more. There’s just one problem—he’s made the Defense Force’s neutralization list under the code name Kaiju No. 8.
Studio Khara are helping out, doing the monster designs and art, but we don’t yet have details for even the main cast.
