Free League Publishing has announced two different Open Game Licenses (OGL) of their own. It comes at a time when Wizards of the Coast’s OGL, used for D&D’s 5e, is under pressure.
The first of Free League’s new offerings is a re-working of their Year Zero Engine OGL.
The second is for Free League’s forthcoming Dragonbane.
Year Zero Engine is behind Aliens, Mutant Year Zero, Blade Runner and Tales from the Loop. Dragonbane is a fantasy classic.
Free League CEO Tomas Härenstam told the press;
It’s clear that it is high time for Free League to have an OGL that is fully our own,”
We’re also told that work on the licenses started last year. It’s not a rush job, but the project was intensified after news of Wizards of the Coast’s plans for OGL broke, as the Year Zero Engine was based on that.
The Walking Dead Universe RPG, which has been announced, will also use the engine.
The Dragonbane license is intended to allow third-party publishers to write supplements for the game, not to create whole new games.
As a result, the YZE OGL has an SRD, which has been updated as part of this process, but the Dragonbane OGL does not. Dragonbane modules created in this way will be able to use a special logo in their marketing.
