Francesco Nepitello’s The One Ring, one of the numerous licenced RPGs based on JRR Tolkien’s novels, has received great praise for its capture of Tolkien’s themes and atmosphere. The journey rules assign each party member a role in charting the route of their fellowship. Innovative Company and Patron rules in the spirit of King Arthur Pendragon and Mouse Guard allow player-Heroes to rest and recoup, perfect their talents, or pursue a noble endeavour. But the insidious threat of Shadow lurks in every quest, corrupting the spirit and destroying hope.
A slice of hope exists in the project, though, as ten per cent of purchases (sans money processing fee) go to the pandemic-fighting Direct Relief charity.
